Gus Lancaster & Crew - June 15, 2002
The crew consisted of Gus Lancaster, Mike Mitchell, Mike Russell, and Tommy Gerard,
all from the Hattiesburg area. Things started out a little doubtful with the winds
on the OS buoy showing 31 knot northerly gusts. We came close to canceling the run, but
the crew was fired up and the forecast was for it to die down late afternoon. We fought
our way 50 miles south to FH-7 jigging a couple rigs along the way without a hit. We anchored
up on the Von Rosenberg in 5-7 foot seas and started chuming. The only
good thing about it being rough was that there were only 2 other boats to compete with.
By afternoon, we had scored our share of Sharks, AJs, and Cobia, so we pulled anchor and
drift fished the other wrecks before heading southeast to blocks 175 and 187. We were
disappointed in the lack of large Red Snapper and Grouper, but we had plenty of 30 pound
AJs to pull on and Mike Russell just couldn't understand why we had to throw those big
fish back after we got one each. We caught several nice fish, including our limit on AJ
and Snapper, 3 Cobia, a nice BlackTip Shark, and 2 King Mackerel. The forecast held true,
for a change, and we had a fairly calm run back in. Total trip encompassed 15.5 hours and
127 miles. Below are the pictures for your enjoyment. If you like them, please
